When Gearbox announced Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, they shook the gaming community by storm when they announced that the game wasn't going to release on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. A PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 exclusive release in Fall 2014? Sounds crazy, right?
Randy Pitchford rationalized to IGN why Borderlands isn't hitting the PS4 just yet.
"It's not free to build a game for next-gen. When you're deciding where you're going to spend your resources, I think we're going to spend all of the attention we can on the game itself."
Pitchford continues, stating "And if you try to imagine the set of Borderlands players that have already upgraded [to Xbox One and PlayStation 4], that's not 100 percent. The difference in users who own newer consoles but do not have an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 is so close to nil that you can't make a business rationalization around that."
So there you have it: Pitchford believes that the PS4's userbase isn't yet large enough to release a Borderlands game on the console. Luckily for us, companies like Warner Bros. feel differently with Arkham Knight.

July 2014 Update: In an E3 Interview with Gamereactor, 2K Australia's Tony Lawrence has stated that there is a chance that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel could hit the PS4 if the demand is there:
"If fans say, 'Hey, we'd really like this on a next-gen console,' well, we'll think about that. But right now, we're concentrating on the consoles we know."
Lawrence goes on to further justify why the game is last generation only:
"The other thing is, it's between, it's the middle in a trilogy, and moving it onto next-gen and requiring people to buy new hardware to play the middle on a trilogy feels a little disingenuous. And we sort of want to respect that. As I said, one day, maybe. We'll think about that, we'll see how people react to the game, how much fun they have, and whether or not everybody moves on to the next gen fully next year."
