A man once told me that he was a gamer “from the womb, to the tomb.” Beautiful words, inspiring ones even. For those about to game, I salute you, but only for a second because I need both hands on the controller.
As a gamer since the days of Sega Genesis, I’ve loved games and they, in turn, have inspired me to chase my dreams of being a writer. It is only fair that I give them their due credit. What you’re about to see are the top 10 PS4 games. These weren’t chosen on a basis of ratings or sales but on something far more precious.
These games have earned their place here, for a short while until the Fall rushes past us with a slew of new games. They are here because they affected me in some profound way, and in some cases, they paved the way for some of the greatest experiences in gaming. A place here isn’t guaranteed because it sold a million copies. A place here is not given, it is earned. Let us begin.
10. Rise of the Tomb Raider
Lara Croft's adventures have long been a staple of gaming, but it wasn't until her latest reboot that she really came back into the scene of gaming. Her latest adventure on PS4 is Rise of the Tomb Raider, and boy is it awesome.
It has the same level of bombastic action as Uncharted, with its own unique elements and environmental puzzles. Furthermore, the crafting mechanics help this one stand out amongst the comparisons to the Uncharted series. It hasn't overthrown Nathan Drake, but it's still well worth your time.
9. Destiny 2
You know, I wasn't a huge fan of the original Destiny if I'm being honest. I was among the people who wished the story had been in the game instead of on Grimoire cards. Well, I gave Destiny 2 a shot and I'm pleased to say the experience is vastly improved in the sequel.
With a strong campaign and story, the game makes a great first impression. Once you reach the endgame, the number of activities and content is amazing. Finishing the campaign in this MMO shooter is just the beginning, but it's a great start to an epic online shooter.
8. Persona 5
The Persona series is a hallmark of modern JRPGs. The latest entry on the PS4 is the culmination of the series' unique style and excellent storytelling. In this game, you'll live the life of a school student and make friends while also doing battle with creatures in unique and intense dungeons.
If you like JRPGs or turn-based RPGs in general, this is easily one of the best you'll find on the PS4 or anywhere for that matter.
7. Battlefield 1
Battlefield has long been a series that's unafraid to try new things. For better or worse, this has made it a favorite among gamers. Battlefield 1 broke the mold once again when they decided to focus on World War I.
It paid off this time, as the new Battlefield is easily one of the best. The campaign has a unique multi-story structure that hits a lot of great beats.
The multiplayer is the same one you love, with new vehicles, maps, and a mode that allows you to experience real battles across multiple maps.
Doom was one of the original first-person shooters and while the last entry several years ago on PC and the original Xbox wasn't critically acclaimed, the newest version, simply titled, DOOM, was an absolute return to form and an amazing shooter overall.
If you long for the days of fast-paced shooting and unapologetic violence in your shooters, DOOM has it in spades. The campaign is excellent and while the multiplayer may leave a bit to be desired, this is one of the purest FPS games in a long time.
5. The Last of Us: Remastered
While not the most articulate writer on the planet, one of our commenters pointed out that I left The Last of Us: Remastered off the last top 10 list update. I stand by my decisions for this list, and I think it’s about time this beauty had another chance at bat. With Uncharted 4 and the Uncharted Collection both coming back around to PS4, I went back to Naughty Dog’s zombie thriller and experienced it once more on the PS4.
Yep, it’s still as amazing as ever, and while we’ve had some incredible games come out, it’s hard to pick out something that has beaten this in terms of quality, story, and gameplay. Until I play something better, it deserves a place in the halls of this list. If you’ve played it, play it again, and if you haven’t I cannot express in words just how incredible of a game this is. Do yourself a favor, play it.
4. Resident Evil VII
The Resident Evil series has been long overdue for an overhaul, and Resident Evil VII was the game to do just that. With a renewed focus on horror and a switch to the first-person perspective,
The results were incredible. Resident Evil VII brought us a true return to the series' roots. It was unique, visceral, gory, and most importantly, terrifying. With full support for VR, this is easily one of the best horror experiences on the PS4.
3. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
Uncharted has been Sony's flagship series since the days of the PS3. After the success of the first one and the universal acclaim of the second, developer Naughty Dog became synonymous with greatness. Now we have what is claimed to be the last game in the series, Uncharted 4.
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is an unforgettable experience. It goes beyond a simple game and really pulls you into its world. Everything about this package is perfect. From the graphics to the story, to the gameplay. The only reason it's not number one is because it can be finished in a few days. Other than that, it's another masterpiece from Naughty Dog.
2. Horizon: Zero Dawn
Guerilla Games is best known for their work on the Killzone franchise, so it was certainly something when they decided to work on an open-world third-person action game everyone turned their heads.
When it finally released, this game was the pinnacle of an open world experience. With incredible graphics, an amazing story, and unique robotic enemies, there was a lot to love about this game from the first glance. Having played through it myself, I would easily put it among the greatest PlayStation games.
1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Was there ever any doubt? I mean, come on guys and gals, have you seen this game? The
Witcher 1 and 2 were PC RPGs (the second one came to 360), but this is the first time we’re seeing the White Wolf on PS4 and oh is it one heck of a debut!
Think of Skyrim, then Dragon Age, then the best RPG you’ve ever played. Got it? Okay, Witcher 3 is ten times better.
Let me just run down the list of features here:
This game literally offers everything you could ever want in a game, and then some. CD Projekt Red completely hit it out of the park with this one.
There you have it, the latest and greatest list of the 10 best games on PS4. What games would you put in the list? Tell me your thoughts in the comments below!
