Note: Since Final Fantasy XIV has been readily available for many months before landing on the PlayStation 4, this review will concentrate mainly on the PlayStation 4 specific features and not so much the gameplay features. You can read about those in our preview.
Final Fantasy XIV had a rough launch back in 2010, with the game being riddled with bugs, boring gameplay and generally being one of the worst MMOs released last generation. Since then, the game underwent a massive change, remaking itself as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, previously available on the PC and PS3.
Now available for the PS4, what makes this version different from the others?
The Best Looking Console Version Yet
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn was an ugly, ugly game on the PlayStation 3. That version had poor textures, missing frames of animation and was overall a subpar experience compared to the PC version. The PS4 version, on the other hand, is much more comparable to the PC version. There are no dropped frames of animation, the game looks fantastic and the textures represent what a current generation MMO should look like. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn on the PS4 is hands down the best looking console MMO released thus far, not only on the PS4 but on any console.
The Game is Still Not Meant for a Controller
The game has been optimized for the DualShock 4, taking advantage of the touch pad by using it as a virtual mouse pointer. However, the game still feels awkward to use with a controller and if you want to play the game seriously, you'll need a keyboard and mouse. Luckily, both the PS4 and FFXIV support this combination so if you find yourself loving the game, invest in the proper tools ASAP.
Still Can't Keep Up With The PC Version
In large areas populated with many different players, the game still suffers with frame rate issues which, in a worst case scenario, can lead to your death. In a Primal fight, this lag could easily kill you, so it's a shame to see that it still exists in any form. However, the lag and framerate issues are minimal at best and only the most hardcore players will encounter the sort of situations where the game will lag a bit.
If you have a PlayStation Vita, you can take advantage of the Remote Play feature that lets you play FFXIV on the go. The feature works great and hardcore FFXIV players will love the ability to take the game anywhere.
If you're not a fan of MMOs, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will do nothing different to change your opinion. However, if you're looking for a new MMO to play on the PS4, FFXIV is currently your only choice and luckily, it's a great one, as long as you don't own a PC capable of running the game.
