Power Pc is far from dead, every console from the Nintendo 64 bit days (maybe even before that) have had a Power PC processor. The reason, you can squeeze more performance out of it which is essential for limited systems such as game consoles.
The cell processor is a power pc processor and knocks the Intel i7 series out of the water by a mile, much more performance per watt and the cell can not be beaten on floating point performance by any Intel or AMD CPU at this time.
Your apple argument is wrong, Apple have to include 2 versions of their operating system on disk since there is still a fraction of people unwilling to move on from the power pc based mac.
Custom CPUs are as expensive to make as the Intel core i7, around $60 which is around £40 per CPU. IBM have been churning out custom CPUs for decades now. The Xenon used in the xbox 360 is a custom CPU and it is cheaper and performance wise is better then the i7, which goes to show that power pc CPUs are much better for performance.
