The PSN is Now the SEN - What Does This Mean for the Future?
By now, unless you've been living under a rock or haven't turned on your PS3 in weeks you know that the PSN is now the SEN, or Sony Entertainment Network. That's not to say that the PSN no longer exists; it's now part of the larger SEN entity. If you were already in the PSN, all you had to do to switch over the SEN was the usual license agreement thing and click a box or whatnot.
But what does it all mean? Is it merely cosmetic or does it tell us something about the future?
What's in a Name?
OK, so SEN doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well as the PSN and I have a harder time typing it on a daily basis than "PSN," but that's probably just a familiarity issue. In time, we'll all get used to it.
What it DOES say, however, is that Sony is dedicated to making sure that in the future they will be focusing on greater brand integration, versus just being considered a gaming company by many.
Of course, we all know that Sony is involved in more than just gaming in that they make TVs, etc., but in this context it looks like Sony is trying to set itself apart as a brand from competitors Microsoft and Nintendo.
In other words, bigger is better.
It's a Good Thing, Ultimately
The name change, while it will take some getting used to, gives Sony the image as being BIG. In other words, the Sony Entertainment Network is about more than just video games for your kids, teenagers, or husbands that refuse to grow up (like me!); it's a place where you can go for all your entertainment needs.
I've been saying this all along as regards the PS4, i.e. that it needs to be a complete entertainment machine. Just like people want one remote to control all their TV gadgets, people will enjoy having one piece of equipment under (or above or beside, whatever the case may be) their TV that will give them everything they want as far as entertainment on their TV goes.
The name change to SEN jibes nicely with this concept and I think this is where Sony is going.
With Sony also going strong with their handheld devices (such as the new PS Vita), it makes sense for them to open up naming conventions so that future products don't just look like subsidiaries of whatever PlayStation exists at the time. Each product or service will be its own entity that utilizes the Sony Entertainment Network as a conduit.
It makes sense, and conspiracy theories aside, there is nothing to worry about on our end. The transition is seamless, though some who have really read the SEN agreement say there is some loose language in there regarding marketing, though it may not necessarily be new. I'm one of the many that doesn't read those wordy agreements, so I don't know for sure.
That being said, I think Sony would be hard-pressed to compete with rumors that Microsoft's Kinect apparently lets them gather information about you through the Kinect about what sort of products you use (searching for logos in your environment, etc.) so they can better market to you. Supposedly, they haven't used this ability yet but Microsoft's VP of their gaming division admitted that it was possible.
What Do You Think?
A lot, if not most, people fear change, so it will be perfectly understandable if a lot of people freaked out about the name change. In the end, however, for my dollar it's just a name. I'm not going to get all wound up about something so petty; instead, I see this change as something that has the potential to be something great for Sony.
With rumors out there that Sony is on the decline and may stop making hardware and focus on game like Sega did years ago, a move like this backed up by huge leap forward in technology with the PS4 can be huge for Sony and will help assert their place at the top of the gaming heap.
Only time will tell, of course, but this name change is just chock full of potential.
