Killzone: Shadow Fall at the Sony Conference – An Exciting Preview for FPS Fans

Placed in the not so distant future, 30 years after the radical events of Killzone 3. In this world you have two different groups vying for power; the Helghast and the Vektans. The setting is a very beautiful and futuristic city dividing by a huge and never ending wall. Fight to save your home world.

Plenty of people got excited about different aspects of the Sony conference, and that all depends on what type of gamer you are. If you’re a pure system fanboy, the hardware features of the Playstation 4 probably got you the most interested and excited. Racing fans got their share of excitement as well with the Drive Club preview. But if you're an FPS fan, and lord knows that there are plenty of them, it is probably the new Killzone preview that got your attention out of all the conference. The graphics and light effects on the sequence shown for the new Killzone: Shadow Fall were truly mouth-watering. Call of Duty fans witnessing Killzone for the first time were certainly impressed as well by the convincing immersion this franchise can provide. Moreover, Sony made sure that this Killzone sequence was actual in-game footage, rather than pure cinematics. This way, all the critics and haters could be put to rest.

Killzone: Shadow Fall at the Sony Conference – An Exciting Preview for FPS FansThe sequence started off with an impressive view of a futuristic city from aboard a flying ship. I could describe this city as an environment that so far FPS players would only dream of fighting in – colorful, futuristic, real, massive, glowing, etc. Humans present throughout the city were also especially realistic considering what we're used to seeing in today's games. This is photorealism at its best.

Great drama was also part of the spectacle. As the aftermath of an explosion left the main character on the floor, he was then forced to witness a reckless murder of two innocent citizens by the enemy. From this first-person view of the character lying on the ground, everyone can understand how this next technology will be able to trigger some even more powerful emotions and let us see how dramatic a battlefield can get and what one can witness as a soldier.

Then came the most action-packed portion of the demo. A very busy battlefield then showed up with smoke, explosion and spectacular glowing fire. We saw the first two weapons in a machine gun and what then looked like a sniper that needs charging to then be able to pull off a powerful shot. It is also worth pointing out the fluidity this gameplay sequence. I’m sure it didn't go unnoticed by all the shooters fans out there. Despite all the lights, glowing fire and smoke on the battlefield, everything kept moving at a good pace and the framerate seemed to keep up nicely.

Then, this impressive demo ended with a crazy ride hung up to a cable of a flying battleship which once again allowed us to admire the incredible city environment powered by the brand new PS4. The battle context in the game is similar to the Cold War Berlin, and the video ended with a view of a symbolic wall to truly set the table on what looks like will be an amazing Killzone: Shadow Fall.

Another Killzone title is also on the way for the PS Vita – Killzone: Mercenary is due for release next September and with the slated PS4 release date of Holiday 2013. So let’s hope to see some interactivity between the two, on top of the already announced PS4/Vita streaming abilities. There is no better title than Killzone to kick things off with a bang on the PS4 as far as FPS games are concerned!

Update: Sony Conference Demo in Retrospect -- April 11th, 2013
Guerilla Games have recently made some interesting comments concerning the Killzone Shadow Fall demo they showed at the Sony Conference. We all know that the Killzone series had to produce an answer to the critics saying that previous presentations (mainly E3 2005) were "fake" and didn't represent their real products properly. We now learn that Guerilla went as far as not bringing a backup playthrough in case their live presentation didn't work properly at the Sony Conference, which in fact made the team feel rather nervous. They then specify that "the game won't be that much embellished compared to the demo from the Playstation meeting". Needless to say that the visual aspect of the game did impress at the conference and that PS4 gamers certainly won't mind to settle for such visual quality. Apparently even three bugs were known and only fixed by the team on the previous day, which made the odds of a bug occurring during the presentation very real. So there you have it, Killzone Shadow Fall still stands as one of the most awaited PS4 exclusive and the team behind it is proving their determination to make it surpass all expectations.
