Sony officially announced the price of the Playstation 4 - $399.00. Many fear the PS4 will sell out before the holiday season leaving many without their dream console. Pre Order the PS4.
One of the biggest questions that went unanswered during Sony's big PlayStation event is how much the upcoming next-generation console will cost for gamers. Figuring out how much the PlayStation 4 will cost requires looking at a number of things. For instance, not only does it help to look back at the pricing model for the PlayStation 3 upon launch, but it helps to look inward at the hardware that Sony will use for the console.
To figure out the price based on hardware, we can compare it to what it would be like if someone were to build a computer with similar specifications as the console is essentially made up of computer components. We know that the PlayStation 4 will feature an AMD 8-core processor with a 1.84 TFLOPS Radeon-based graphics engine. In addition, it will sport 8 GB GDDR5 memory, a built-in hard drive and a Blu-ray/DVD drive running at 6x and 8x speed, respectively.
Let's start with the processor; AMD sells an 8-core processor on its own website for $160. It also sells the 2 TFLOPS Radeon HD 6870 for another $145, which also has 2 GB of GDDR5 memory. Though it is more powerful than the PlayStation 4 with 2 TFLOPS, it has a quarter of the memory expected for the console, so we can even out the difference in price. Hard drives for the PlayStation 3 ranged in a number of sizes, so we will assume that Sony wants to provide a 250 GB hard drive. This can cost anywhere between $60 and $150, depending on the brand name and speed. Finally, a Blu-ray/DVD drive for a computer would run about another $50 on average.
With these basic compionents, a similarly-equipped computer would cost about $415 to $505, depending on the website or store you buy each item from. This kind of price is actually within the confines of what Asahi, a well-known Japanese publication, guessed the cost of the PlayStation 4 would be. According to the newspaper, we can expect the cost of the PlayStation 4 to be about 40,000 yen, which translates to $417 USD. It's official, the PS4 will cost $399!
We will likely not see the console rise as high as $500 as Sony is likely to receive discounts by purchasing components directly from AMD; the aforementioned prices are what one would expect to pay at a store, not the wholesale or discounted bulk price that Sony is likely to pay.
When you look back at the PlayStation 3, which released for about $600, it makes sense that Sony would not want to repeat this mistake; with such a high price, sales suffered as gamers were too hesitant to spend such a fee on a console. Sony has most likely learned from this error and will not overprice its PlayStation 4 console. It is even possible that Sony will sell the console at a considerably smaller margin or even at cost so that more players would be willing to pick up a console and spend more on games and accessories.
In a surprising move in the months since the announcement, Sony has been keeping quiet on the price of the PlayStation 4; however, this doesn't mean the company hasn't dropped some hints about what to expect. Sony Worldwide Studios vice president Michael Denny has been quoted as saying "We want a system that can reach as broad a gaming audience as possible. We have created a console absolutely focused on gamers – and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well. I think to some extent I can ask you to draw your own conclusions."
What this means is that Sony realizes the pricing mistakes it made on the PlayStation 3 by originally pricing the console not only out of reach for casual gamers but hardcore gamers as well. Sony will most likely be going for a far cheaper price than any of us expect in any effort to appeal to as broad an audience as possible.

If some of you people are really concerned about the price in your country just pre-order it from the US. I've been reading and hearing from people in the industry that the PS4 won't have regional coding so I can buy those games that only release in Japan or other countries and still be able to play them.

Sony does have free to play games so you have 3 or 5 free games plus ps3 online games that you bought on your psn. So that could hold you over if you dont want to spend all of money all at once.

what about the controller?
in the article, it mentions all or some of the aspects of the ps4, and how much they cost, but what about the controller? what about games? as you probobly already know, the controller has a touch pad, witch im sure would ring up the price past 450 USD. if you go to the gamestop website, you can already pre order the xbox one, and that is bundled with the kinect and a game. and all it costs is 560 USD. so how much will it cost with the controller? will it be bundled with games? and when will it be available for pre order so we can know

Do you really think that the unit would be sold without a controller? C'mon. I can understand if the PS4's price rises up to about 500 USD if all the other peripherals and possibly a game are included, but the base price includes the unit and a controller. Sony probably priced it that low so people can spend more on games and the other add ons.

if we concentrate on how to make bigger profits,idea related about supply and demand might be a good solution...i'd read comments from various commentators and all had fall to only one topic,"PRICE OF UPCOMING CONSOLE"...There also commented that SONY COMPANY has a huge and massive investment on it's product.Therefore,it can produce a lot of consoles in reasonable price that even a mediate cost of living can purchase...its no differ in selling a $2.00 candy in a store but a child ( mediate cost of living person) has only $1.00 on its pocket...

If it is that price when launched I will not be getting it, because there is no way I can afford that price.

I can't wait.... for those pc folks on here... please do not knock our console. remember a console is different then pc and we pay for our own experience which is not the same as a pc experience. when a pc gets playstation network then i will make other considerations :-)

Why would you care about the playstation network? It isn't even that good. You can do pretty much anything on the pc that the playstation has to offer. You just use different programs for some things. I mean steam has chat, voice chat, game demos, free games, game store and friends list. What else do you really need that steam or a web browser can't get you?

adapters for it are going to be expensive as you need a step down converter depending how many watts it uses as america uses a lower voltage from the wall then we do if you plug it our wall with a regular adapter it will just go boom
my laptop for exammple is american it uses 70w so i had to find a adapter of 90w garanteed to work for a hour at this power but it runs constantly on 85w
depends on how much the new console will use judging by the ps3 it will use alot and the adapter needed could range from 50 to 70 pounds
I can tell you from personal
I can tell you from personal experience that the ps3 didn't require any form of adapter. I am currently using my UK ps3 in the US without any issue at all. However, please note that you will not be able to play older ps/ps2 games as they are coded for the EU region (PAL)versus the American NTSL. That particular coding is fixed, thereby using a HDMI cable will not resolve the issue.
