Star Wars Hits The Next Generation With Star Wars 1313
An upcoming third-person action game, Star Wars 1313 is one game that definitely has fans riled up and waiting with great anticipation.Though the game has not yet been officially announced for any specific platforms, the gameplay trailers and screenshots previously shown are far beyond anything capable on the most recent consoles such as the PlayStation 3.
The game title comes from the underground city Level 1313, a criminal town buried deep under the safe haven of the planet Coruscant. According to the Star Wars Encyclopedia, Level 1313 is a bustling metropolitan city that truly never sleeps, with over 5,000 levels to the actual city.
Most Star Wars games allows players to take on the role of a Jedi or other force-sensitive character, but LucasArts looks to take a different approach with Star Wars 1313. Rather than a lightsaber-wielding Force-sensitive character, players wield a common blaster and tech gadgets as a bounty hunter. This offers a much different sense of gameplay than Star Wars fans are generally used to.
One aspect about the game that truly excites fans is the fact that Star Wars 1313 will hopefully touch on a darker theme than past games. Given the setting deep beneath Coruscant, it's already clear that the upcoming game requires a more mature audience to handle the lethal bounty hunter as he traverses through the criminal city of Level 1313.
So far, LucasArts has released several screenshots and a few trailers, displaying a very aesthetically pleasing environment. The environment is detailed and dimly lit to appropriately display the dark world that the main character must work within.
Another way in which Star Wars 1313 proves it is stepping away from the days of old and looks to capture a more mature audience is by having several mechanics designed for the thinking gamer. Players must rely on thought rather than the fact that they're Force-sensitive characters capable of handling any huge enemy. As the creative director at LucasArts, Dominic Robilliard, puts it: "The danger of this world needs to live in the moment-to-moment gameplay."
Robilliard continues: "So we've got mechanics that are about a character who's limited by the range of human ability, and the extraordinary things you get to do are very much based around this bounty hunter gear and the gadgets. But ultimately he's honorable in a way that I think is easier to relate to."
Similarly, producer Peter Nicolai chipped in: "That's what Dominic and the team have been looking for, to try and ground the entire story and the experiences, with a lot less exposure to anything like Jedi powers, much more of a lethal environment, where a lot of the weaponry, the dangers of the world you're in, have a much closer impact on the player. It does add to that overall dark and gritty feel that we're going for."
At the moment, there is no word on when Star Wars 1313 will release. In addition, the recent acquisition by Disney has placed the game development on hold, though it has not been canceled. With a hold on development, we may not be able to expect the game to be a launch title for the PlayStation 4, but we can still look forward to the game when it returns to development status. Originally slated for late 2013, the delay could push the title back to sometime in 2014.
Above all, it will definitely be interesting to see LucasArt's direction with Star Wars 1313. We can only hope that Disney's halt on production will end soon so we can get closer to the day that gamers can enjoy the title on the PlayStation 4 console. We'll keep you updated here at PS4 Experts on any changes in development for this highly anticipated title from LucasArts.

March 19th Update: LucasArts Confirms 1313 Still In Development
Since its acquisition by Disney, LucasArts has cancelled many of its Star Wars projects. For games, Star Wars: First Assault has seen the axe while on the television side of things, Clone Wars has been cancelled as well.
However, it seems Star Wars 1313 has been spared this fate for now. Speaking with Kotaku, a LucasArts representative stated the following: "LucasArts has been working diligently to take advantage of the tremendous opportunities that the new Star Wars movies present. Star Wars 1313 continues production."
So despite previous rumors, Star Wars 1313 is not cancelled nor put on hold; development continues as normal. However, it is a possibility the game could see major changes to bring it in line with the upcoming Disney Star Wars movies.

April 8th, 2013 Update -- Star Wars 1313 Cancelled
As you've most likely heard, Disney, the new parent of all of George Lucas' properties and studios, has shut down the game division known as LucasArts. While this shocking move has ramifications across the board, for PS4 fans it brings one sad piece of news: Star Wars 1313 is now cancelled, as Disney looks to license the Star Wars brand to other publishers rather than create their own games.
In the wake of LucasArts closing, it was rumored Star Wars 1313 may survive if Disney were to license the game and its assets, already well in development, to another publisher. However, it is now been confirmed this won't be the case as Disney does not wish to take this direction. As such, the game is officially cancelled.
New information about the game is starting to come to light in the wake of this cancellation. Originally set to star a new character and an original story, the game had been reworked to place players in the role of Boba Fett, giving the player access to his wide array of gadgets and weapons. The change came from Lucas himself who felt that placing players in the role of Fett would have helped sales and drive excitement about the game.
Sadly, this will now never come to be. Star Wars 1313 was one of the first PlayStation 4 games to be unveiled and is now the first one cancelled.
