Little Big Planet 3 A Big Deal on PS4

Little Big Planet 3 on the PS4

One of the PlayStation 3's best features was its exclusive, unique franchises, such as Uncharted, The Last of Us and LittleBigPlanet. With The Last of Us already ported to PS4 and a new Uncharted on the way, LBP fans were left wondering "What about me?" At E3 2014, they finally got what they were hoping for with the announcement that LittleBigPlanet 3 would be hitting the PlayStation 4.

Different Developer, Same Concept
One of the biggest changes to the franchise is that creator Media Molecule will not be working on it; instead, development reins have been handed off to Sumo Digital alongside Sony's XDev team. Don't be alarmed, though, as LittleBigPlanet 3 offers the same core foundation that fans have come to expect. You'll create, share, and rate levels in a game that will provide endless replayability and family fun in a way that launch title Knack did not.

Like past LittleBigPlanet games, there will be a single player story to play through, even though the real action will be with the level creation tool like in past entries.

More Than Just Sackboy
One of the biggest changes is the addition of three more protagonists to the game. In addition to Sackboy, who now has the exclusive ability to climb on vines and ropes, you have:

Oddsock: A character who resembles a dog who is known for his speed.

Toggle: A character who can alternate between big and small forms, hence his name.

Swoop: A bird who can fly and pick up objects.

An Expanded Level Creation Tool
These additional characters open up new avenues for level creation, letting inventive creators craft levels that rely on one, or all, of each character's abilities. Speaking of level creation, LBP 3 now supports up to 16 layers of depth, a huge increase from the 3 layers present in LBP 2. If you thought you saw some amazing levels before, you haven't seen anything yet, especially given the fact that level size and length is now dependent on the size of your hard drive only, not by in-game metrics.

The game will also feature new power-ups and creation tools, not to mention an amazing new graphics engine that brings Sackboy's world to life like never before.

Celebrity Voices
A pair of celebrities will bring their voices to the story mode of LittleBigPlanet 3: Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry. Medical drama fans may recognize Hugh Laurie as Dr. House, while Stephen Fry has starred in a number of BBC comedies.

Fry will take on the role of the narrator, while Laurie takes on the role of the game's main villain.

Co-Op
LittleBigPlanet 3 supports co-operative play for up to four players. At the moment, details are light but we do know the game will support online play.

Previous Content
Sony has announced that not only will all previously created levels for LBP 1 and 2 transfer over to 3, but all costumes from the previous games will transfer over to the third game as well! The previous costumes and levels will be rendered in 1080p using the extra detail from the new graphics engine.

Frozen Tie-In

If you aren't yet sick to death of Frozen, Sony has a treat for you: DLC from the hit movie is now available for LittleBigPlanet 3. Four costumes based on the movie are available for $2 a piece, and the Winter Creator Kit is now available to all players free of charge!

Pre-Order Bonuses
At participating retailers, gamers who preorder LBP 3 will receive a 6" Sackboy plush they can use to decorate their real-life living space. In addition, each retailer is offering their own exclusive. Amazon is giving away costumes that let you dress the characters in outfits of past PlayStation stars, while GameStop is giving away a mythological creatures pack with every preorder.

Release Date
LittleBigPlanet 3 is releasing in November 18th, 2014 in the United States and was scheduled for November 19th, 2014 in Europe. However, a delay will push the European release date back to November 26th, 2014 in that region.
