Whats new with PlayStation - January 2019

While a lot of are holding our breath and awaiting a PlayStation 5 announcement, there are a few things happening with our current generation of the PS brand, outside of upcoming game releases.

For starters, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced they are acquiring Audiokinetic. This is a good move on Sony’s part, as it allows them to become a much more important staple for game developers.

Simply put, Audiokinetic offers a sound engine to game developers, that provides them with tools to make our games sound great! It goes much deeper than this, but these tools are used for over 500 per year. That’s a pretty big deal.

President and CEO of SIE, John Kodera said this:

A rich and all-encompassing audio experience is increasingly critical to the overall gameplay experience, further enhancing immersion and emotion for the player. Audiokinetic is a preeminent provider of audio solutions for the gaming industry, and we are confident that this acquisition will allow us to further grow the PlayStation platform and contribute to the broader gaming industry. It’s our goal to support Audiokinetic’s effort to advance its audio technology while maintaining independence and platform neutrality.

As I said above, this goes much deeper, but we will have to wait and see just how deep it goes. Then acquisition will be final on january 31’st, 2019.

In further PlayStation news, the PS4 has officially sold over 91.6 million consoles to date. A large part of the PS4’s success, is the number of excellent exclusive and non-exclusive titles available for PlayStation 4. No doubt that Marvel’s Spider-man has played a role in the end of year consoles sold, with over 9 million copies of the game already purchased by consumers.

President and CEO of SIE, John Kodera also touches base on the subject by stating this:

Thanks to the continued support from our fans during the holiday season, we are pleased to announce that PS4 has reached 91.6 million units globally. We are also happy to announce that the monthly active users of PlayStation Network continues to show strong growth, and has surpassed 90 million as of the end of November 2018. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones. This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4. As we look toward the next PS4 milestone, SIE will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive entertainment experiences to the world.

The PS4 is clearly doing well, so it really makes one wonder when the PS5 could possibly release. While many gamers believe it is still too early for another generation of consoles to come along, I’m personally ready for the upgrade. I love my PS4, but I have always felt like it was only a minor jump forward from the PS3. PS5 is where things will really shine.

In the meantime, I’ll look forward to playing some (hopefully) great games in the 2019 lineup. What games are on your radar for 2019? Days Gones? The Last of Us 2? Just to name a couple...
