PS4 Release Date - The Countdown Begins

Playstation 4 Release Date Headquarters (Continually Updated)

While the PlayStation 3 is just now hitting its stride, and has its best days still ahead of it, Sony is not one to rest on its laurels, and with the intense competition in the video game world at present, plans for the PlayStation 4's release plans are in motion now that it has been officially announced. In fact not only is the PlayStation 4 getting this treatment, but even the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 6 are in the early stages of planning and conceptualization at Sony's R&D labs.

Although we've yet to see what the PS3 can fully do when really put through its paces (in fact Sony states that games currently on the market are not even close to pushing the system to its full potential), the thought of an even more powerful console looming on the horizon has gamers worried about the holes it will leave burning in their pockets, but giddy at the confirmed capabilities of what this new behemoth of a console will be able to pull off. See the specs here.

When is the PS4 coming out? The Question Everyone Wants the Answer To...
As a result, the question on everyone's mind is, when will the PlayStation 4 see the light of day?!?!? Sony has officially said "Holiday 2013" which means we will have a chance to play that Playstation 4 this year! This follows the trend of Sony's previous console generations. The PlayStation 1 was first released in late 1994 in Japan and 1995 throughout the rest of the world. The PlayStation 2 hit stores in 2000, giving the PS1 a retail shelf life of 6 years from its Japanese launch. Likewise, the PlayStation 3 came out in 2006, 6 years after the release of the PS2. Following this trend that Sony has established it was not a surprise that Sony officially announced the Playstation 4 on February 20th 2013 in NYC.

Both the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2, which dominated their generations of the console wars, came to market at the same time or earlier than their competition. The PlayStation 1 was launched just after the Sega Saturn, and well before the Nintendo 64, while the PlayStation 2 was released before both the Xbox and Nintendo Gamecube.

This enabled Sony to get a head start on the competition and gave developers time to build their skills at developing games for the console, to the point that even as more powerful consoles came after, games released on the older system were just as good technically, providing no real incentive for players to move to the new consoles.

This same effect has worked against the PlayStation 3 to some extent, as though considered to be far more powerful than the Xbox 360, the one year head start the 360 received has allowed developers to more quickly maximize the system's potential, resulting in games that rivaled games on the PS3 when it released. Only as the system's life spans come to an end will we likely see the PlayStation 3 come out with games that clearly trump what the 360 can do graphically.

Now we can all rejoice since the PS4 is official and will be coming out in 2013. The question is will you be ready for it? Let us know what you think. Feel free to comment below. You can also join our PS4 forums to voice your opinion on everything PlayStation 4.

April 30th, 2013 Update -- More Rumors Point To October 2013

First the Assassin's Creed IV team, now Naughty Dog possibly spills the beans in regards to an October 2013 release date.

Unlike Jean Guesdon, who was direct in his approach, Naughty Dog takes a different approach by what could be a subtle reference to the PS4 release date. This hint is found in their newest game The Last Of Us, one of the last titles to be released for the PlayStation 3.

In a recent trailer for the game, Joel and Ellie come across a sign that states "Mandatory Evacuation Notice: 10/17/2013." While many might think this was just a date chosen at random, could this in fact be Naughty Dog releasing the PS4 date in secret to its fans? After all, Naughty Dog is one of Sony's top developers so it's likely they are privy to such knowledge.

We've put the image below for your viewing pleasure! Let us know in the comments if you think this date is for real or just a joke by Naughty Dog.

PS4 Release Date

April 5th, 2013 Update -- PlayStation 4 In October 2013?
According to British newspaper The Sun, the PlayStation 4 could be out sooner than we all think.

Our first clue for an October 2013 release date was from members of the Assassin's Creed IV team, namely Jean Guesdon, who stated that the game will ship out on the PS4 at the same time as the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions: November 1st. This infers the system would need to be out before the game releases. However, The Sun claims to have heard from Sony CEO Andrew House himself that the system will definitely be hitting in October for 300 pounds, which translates to $450 -- another number we've heard come up again and again in regards to price.

Keep in mind that The Sun wasn't directly quoting Andrew House, only that he had made these comments to them. There is always the possibility of The Sun interpreting broad statements House made or misinterpreting the information altogether (or, to be a bit more cynical, fabricating data to sell papers), so we'll still have to wait for an official Sony statement for the actual release date.

I have read that the PS4 will not play older version games. Sony does plan for in the future to download older games.

dam u has a long count down

Watch dogs proves that isnt release date

Watch dogs is being released in November and it will be released on ps4 day one because its after the ps3 versions release. so it will be either in late November or in December

Release Date

One thing people need to think about is that just because a release date is confirmed, the location may not be. Look back at PS3's launch. They would launch in one market and then another a few weeks/months down the road. Even if they were to release a date they could be sly about it and give you a date for the UK or Asia. Generally the states get it first.... in most instances... i believe. However I may also be mistaken.

overheat?

will the ps4 run for hours without worrying if it overheats?

i want it to be released sooner

i own all the playstation consoles and i want the ps4 i dont care how much it cost

Haha

Just make sure u get the first model of the ps4 cuz if u take a look at the ps3 wen the first model came out it was far better then the newest model of the ps3 we all know soon or later play station will cut corners to make a bigger profit like the corners they cut off the ps3.

Cutting Corners

I noticed one of the first things to go was backwards compatibility. If I were to guess it was due to Sony not seeing that feature getting used all the time so they chose to eliminate it.... along with other features that maybe weren't getting utilized as much as they'd liked. I for one haven't ever really played my PS2 games on my PS3.... let alone PS1 games.

What else was left out apart from BC?

The backwards compatibility was removed later in part because of the cell architecture. The processor ran less efficiently when set to be able to read games of the PS1 & 2 architecture, as those were made to run on more PC-like architecture. The other reason is because it was more expensive for Sony to make the processor be able to do the tasks as well - at the beginning of the PS3's life, it cost Sony $700 just to produce the Blue-Ray player ALONE, which was the same amount of profit they got back on the most expensive model. Sony lost hundreds on every model sold for around 2-3 years, multiplied by tens or hundreds of millions, that's BILLIONS lost. They needed a way to scrape every last dime back into their pockets.

Now, tell me what else they removed from the PS3 in later years? Exactly. Nothing.

The PS4 won't be backwards compatible with disk-based games for the same reason - a separate architecture. It's closer to the PS2 and 1 architecture, but it really isn't worth the trouble and expense in optimizing the processor. It would take away from the ability to play the new generation games, AND how easily they're developed (which is the big thing when moving from PS3-4), all the while delaying the machine, and upping the price for the consumers. This is why backwards compatibility is being utilized with streaming - you can just stream your old PS3 games. I'm not sure how you'll get your games and data back, but I will assume with a PSN save file scan. I don't know if this will cost you at all, either. And as for PS1 and 2 game streaming, I don't believe Sony has made it clear on how that will be done.

Additional features phased out....

Some interesting information... according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

Some of the other features changed were as follows;
USB 2.0 port reduction from 4 to 2
SACD support
Linux support
Flash Memory Card readers

True enough...

The USB port and Linux discontinuation is kinda odd...

But SACD and Flash memory doesn't seem important. You can get USB-SD adapters very easily. Linux... I may have read somewhere (don't take my word for this; I'm not sure), but it either gave people too much modification/hack access, or it was making software updates to the PS3 OS more difficult, so it's discontinuation was either for the safety of personal information, or to make system updates easier. I may very well be wrong.

So the biggest downside (if I'm correct on the Linux thing) seems to be the USB port reduction... There doesn't seem to be a god reason. I don't think USB 2.0 ports are at ALL expensive to produce. It would seem many people would want to charge a controller or two (or use a USB-powered third-party controller), and a headset, requiring at least THREE ports... Four just adds convenience, maybe for music-storing devices or a a third or fourth controller. Plus, it would give the PS3 a slight advantage over the 360, as it only has 2. I don't see Sony's logic, here.

release date

Have a look at the picture above. The date is there people :)

This is speculation...

This isn't the official release date... It's only speculated. This is NOT an official Sony site. This clock used to point to a 2012 release date.

Sony has stated that it will release in the 2013 "holiday season", as in October-December 2013.

YEa

i dont think that is the corrrect date lad

and does anyone know if Gaikai costs $$$ for streaming live Video Games

Price?

CoD:Ghosts will be very nice on PS4. I hope Sony don't charge too much for the console as PC prices are deffinately on their way down. I think $300-400 US would be the best possible outcome for both fans and the company.

I hope

They will update certain games for example BLACK ops 2 so u can play them on it and whats the most important question that hast been asked will the games cost the same or will they be more expensive??????????

a little confused

Activision has announced that the next COD will come out on the PS3 as well as the PS4 on November 5th however when you go to the COD website you can only preorder on PS3. if PS4 comes out before the game how come you can't preorder it. that seems off.

Just a guess

If I were to guess I would say that the reason you can pre-order PS4 games is due to no actual price point being set for the games. That, to the best of my assumption is the reason Game Stop here in the US hasn't opened pre-orders for the PS4... no price point or range.

Amazing idea

They should return the capability of playing multiple PS games. Make it where the PS4 can play all of its PS games because many people will still have there past games. I know I still play my PS2 games all 30 of them and I still will want to play my ps3 ones too.

Backwards Compatability

I am a computer engineer by trade. The reason the newer consoles do not play the older games is due to the programing architecture is fundamentally different at its core. Think of this as the PS3, PS4, PS2, Xbox, Xbox One, etc; are all different species and their programming is DNA. You can't take DNA from say a Rat and a human and make a Ratman. While this would be cool, they won't be fully functional species with our current tech. I hope this helps some of you guys understand that this isn't solely the manufacturers being greedy. Yes they can make them work and run, but the system won't be fully functional and the system won't meet its full potential. Items like voice recognition and controls won't work on the older games, and like the Ratman; you won't get the best of two species but the PS2 ability will hamper the PS4's potential.

graphics

Gameplay & story are always important but graphics are the real reason I upgrade my consoles. I just hope the graphics quality justifies the price of buying a whole new console.

I still remember when the Xbox 360 & PS3 first came out & some game reviewer said "perhaps there's a secret code that you enter to unlock the [much improved] graphics?" LOL

NO FREE ONLINE?

i dont have to money to pay online if you do have to start paying for online i WILL NOT BUY IT because that will be $450 for the system $60 a month for internet $60 are more for a game just system and game with internet puts me in the hole $570 and it already cost me $720 a year to have internet to play online for the ps3 so a years worth of it would cost all together with out payin psn would be $1410 i only added just 4 games a year

PS Network

You know the internet service is free.... its just 60 dollars for 12 months for ps plus with a bigger game library Then Xbox. PlayStation games prices are really lowering now

hj

lol

lol

just get a PC

!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, that is the reason why a lot of people bought ps3's as well over xbox

lag connention??? be bumer

it did say it will have 750harddive 1000 harddive 1tp that nice... playstation 4 will not play playstation 3 deffent hardware ... no downlodeing in game play that nice .. will it lag over time???

I hardly understood what you wrote...

I'm assuming your talking about Gigabytes in the hard drive... So far that hasn't been announced. I'm guessing it's going to be a few terabytes (few thousand gigs).

As for the lag question, I have no clue what you're talking about.

Keeping money to buy it!

I have the exact money that i need to buy it im really excited and i will ne ver buy anything else until i buy the incredible PS4!!!!!

It it really what we need

Like it states in the above article "Sony states that games currently on the market are not even close to pushing the system to its full potential" so how will a new system make game play that much better? It wont all its going to do is cost us more money for the same things we could get on the PS3. sony shouldent make a new system intill we have a game developer that will push the limits of the current system then we should expand. We dont need a new system we need new games...

Profit before Quality - by Johann J Geib

The PS4 seems like it will be lacking quality for the purpose of a selfish financial gain, rumors express the system does not reach its full potential.
This is the result of the harmful psychological marketing techniques applied upon society every day. By holding on quality they can manipulate growth however over time PlayStation will lose loyalty. This could possibly turn into a huge monster for Sony. I believe the competitors have impacted the success expected for the PS3, surprising Sony into a new challenge.
I hope they have more than one option to pick from as far as memory, even better would be an external capability of memory. I love the ability to access the internet freely, with similar capabilities as a computer. Imagine if we could play PlayStation, PS2 and PS3 games. Maybe Sony could offer different packages where the customer could personalize the product to fit their needs, I believe this approach would be wonderful advancement in the gaming business furthermore loyalty would increase due to satisfaction.
What if you could???
Would you buy a custom PS4 with all capabilities (fully loaded) included for a higher price? Or would you rather buy different PlayStation series year after year in order to keep up with technology?

why is it tahing so long its

why is it tahing so long its already been 6 mounths .

...

Because it's coming out at the end of 2013...? Maybe that's why it isn't out yet...?

...Obvious answer is obvious...

What IS holiday 2013?

I don't get what 'holiday 2013' is... Is it bonfire night??? Define please.

Holiday 2013

I might mean before thanksgiven or before christmas this year.
