Over the years, us Playstation fans have seen many characters come and go. But there are some that stick in our heads, some that define their respective games and franchises, and some that are so bad*ss you can't help but love them. This article is dedicated to these characters. So without further ado, I present to you the top 5 Playstation mascots.
5. Ratchet and Clank
Yes, I realise that Ratchet and Clank are in fact two people. But they're such a close pair that they count as one. These two made their first appearance in their debut title "Ratchet and Clank" which came out for the PS2 in late 2002. Developed by Insomniac, the game featured tonnes of action, some very funny characters, a whole heap of planets to explore and lots (and lots) of weapons. Since the 2002 game, Insomniac have released 10 other games in the series. We don't know whether there will be a Ratchet and Clank title on the PS4, but we can sure hope that they release one.
4. Crash Bandicoot
If good old Crash Bandicoot wasn't abandoned shamelessly by Naughty Dog, then chances are he would be #1 on this list for me. But unfortunately, Sony have lost all rights to the character. But that doesn't mean we can't have fond memories of him. Crash pretty much defined the PS1 generation. He appeared in TV spots, advertisements and a whole heap of games. Great games - in fact. Including what is arguably the best non-nintendo kart racer of all time - Crash Team Racing. There are a lot of Playstation fans who really hope one day, we see another Crash game.
Now this one is a lot more violent than the previous two, but equally as symbolic of the Playstation franchise. For those of you who don't know, Kratos is the main protagonist of the God of War franchise, a series of action games on the PS2, PS3 and PS Vita. He runs around killing demons and battling Gods, including Aries, Poseidon and even Zeus. Developers Sony Santa Monica never fail to impress with their epic scale boss battles either. Who can forget diving into the stomach of Cronos only to slice your way out... such fond memories.
2. Nathan Drake
Nathan Drake - the ultimate adventurer. Everything every dude with their PS3 wants to be. The guy collects relics and battles pirates for a living, who wouldn't want to play as him? Without Nathan Drake, the Uncharted series wouldn't be half as good as it is today. Nathan Drake is a true game action hero - Naughty Dog outdid themselves with him. He's not just a generic nameless soldier, he's a character with "character" if that makes sense. Not to mention the fact he's incredibly well voice acted (in Nolan North we trust). He might not have weapons as cool as Jak and Daxter or Ratchet and Clank, but Nathan Drake does get to mess with some pretty cool firepower, almost all of which translates into Uncharted's multiplayer.
For me, Sackboy embodies everything that is great with the human imagination. He's a blank slate of a character, but we as players make him into something else. We put him in environments we've created, make him look like we want and play him the way we want to. It's the simplicity of Sackboy that makes him so appealing as a character. He has no superpowers, laser weapons, etc. He can jump and grab. Everything else he does is from our doing. It makes you feel like you have a real connection on input on the character.
That concludes our list. But of course there aren't just 5 Playstation mascots. There are tonnes... Sir Daniel Fortesque, Spyro, Radec, Kat, the list goes on. The important thing to recognize is that they define our platform. When you think of Playstation, you think of one of the characters from one of their games. That's the way it works. Without characters like Sackboy and Kratos games would not be anywhere near as good as they are now.
So, who are you favorite Playstation mascots?
