Ancestors Legacy Review - Mind over Metal

Ancestors Legacy

While I grew up playing RTS (real-time strategy) games on the PC like Starcraft and Warcraft III, consoles have often struggled with bringing the experience to a controller smoothly. It’s no easy task, but some have proven it can be done. In fact, the PS4 has had plenty of these titles, but few have really managed to bring the experience over smoothly.

Ancestors Legacy on the PS4 is here to break the mold and offer a polished, calculated, and satisfying strategy experience on console. It’s a tall order, but this historical strategy title certainly makes a strong first impression. Does it charge confidently into battle or fall at the feet of greater games? Let’s find out.

A Beautiful Ballet of Strategy and Pitch-Perfect Controls

Ancestors Legacy comes packed with a full set of campaigns that span across the four factions: Vikings, Slavs, Anglo-Saxons, and Germans. The story in each campaign is delivered via narration, some excellent still art, and in-game cutscenes. They aren’t the kind of stories that will have you on the edge of your seat, but they are good enough to add weight and context to the proceedings, which I appreciated.

The campaigns do enough to make them feel like more than just tutorials for Skirmish and multiplayer modes, which is also something you don’t see very often in modern RTS games. For example, the objectives have a nice variety to them. They go far beyond simply rushing in and overwhelming the enemy.

In fact, Ancestors Legacy leans into the strategic elements of the genre far more than its other contemporaries. You will rarely feel confident enough to throw your forces at a threat. Instead, careful use of stealth, battle stances, and strategic approaches will ultimately give you the victory.

Each faction has their own strengths and weaknesses, along with hero characters, so the strategy goes beyond simple looks. When you jump into multiplayer or Skirmishes, you’ll also find an impressive amount of sliders and options to tailor the experience.

The multiplayer matches also support up to six players, which makes for some truly epic encounters. Resources in Ancestors Legacy are also given their own unique treatment. Instead of collecting them from static locations, you’ll control specific areas to gain the upper hand.

Since each unit has their own unique formations and abilities (such as laying traps), you won’t be able to simply send in a rush of units (the cap is also lower to prevent this). This is the kind of RTS that rewards strategy and careful thinking more so than anything else.

The surprisingly solid campaign, combined with an excellent suite of Skirmish and multiplayer options and a focus on true strategy make Ancestors Legacy the RTS to beat on the PS4.

Exquisite Detail and Lighting

Ancestors Legacy

Ancestors Legacy is an absolutely gorgeous RTS on PS4 Pro. The level of detail when you bring the camera in close blows away any others in the genre. Animations also benefit from a magnificent amount of polish. Battles play out realistically with brutal attacks and punishing blows if you choose to zoom in.

Ancestors Legacy is a rich and detailed RTS experience for PS4, one that packs excellent presentation and gameplay into a respectable amount of content for both single player and multiplayer. In terms of RTS experiences, you can’t ask for much more than that. Fans of the genre should absolutely check this one out.

Final Score: 8.5/10
