Is there a more bad ass video game character than God of War’s Kratos? I mean seriously he is one really bad dude. I do not mean that as some kind of metaphor either Kratos is a terrible person. Yet there is just something so appealing about him. Despite his clear flaws the God of War series does such a great job of telling a great story, that you really want to help Kratos’s soul find peace.
So far we have had five God of War games, we of course have the trilogy of main games, but we also have the two spin off games Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta that were released for the Playstation Portable. These two games would then later be ported to the Playstation 3. Now as a gamer I have loved every one of these five games. Even the Playstation Portable games offer a fantastic experience that no other game in my humble opinion comes remotely close to matching.
I think that it is clearly obvious that at some point during its life time the Playstation 4 will no doubt have a God of War game. Will that game feature Kratos? This for me is the biggest question. If you look at the five games that we have already had, and not even counting the upcoming God of War: Ascension. What more could Kratos possibly do? He fought and killed Ares, and became the God of War in the first game. God of War II would see him time travel and wage war on Olympus. And who can forget that he even managed to kill Zeus in God of War III. This is not even counting the events that are equally as impressive that took place in the two Playstation Portable games.
God of War: Ascension is said to be a prequel, and will show us a Kratos before he ever became the God of War. It is hard to imagine that there will be another God of War game on the Playstation 3 after this, so where does this leave the series when it debuts on the Playstation 4.
I think the future of the God of War franchise and Kratos actually lays within God of War: Ascension. This is just one gamers opinion here, but I have a feeling that the reason for this prequel may very well be a reason to give us more God of War. Maybe the events of God of War: Ascension will create a whole new time frame in the God of War universe. This really would not be that out of place for the series. I mean Kratos has travelled back in time. So is creating a different time frame really all that much of a stretch of the imagination. What actually happened to Kratos as the end of God of War III really is not known. So is it possible that somehow he managed to find a way back to a time before he killed his family, and started the events of the whole saga?
This would be a great way to keep the series going forward, but without having to reboot it. Kratos is a very unique character. One unlike any other in current or even past video games that I can think of. Greek Mythology has a ton of great stories, and characters that it can draw from to make a whole new series for Kratos.
While the story is very complex in the God of War series. To be honest the same cannot be said for its game play. This certainly is not a knock on the series. In fact I love the hack and slash game play style of God of War. I feel that with each release the control has gotten tighter and tighter. Not to mention the gore has gotten even gorier. So that raises the next question will the core game play of God of War on Playstation 4 change? I really hope not. In some perhaps most cases keeping the same formula for years can make a game series go stale. God of War however I think is the opposite. Gamers know what to expect from a God of War game pure hack and slash action with a great story.
Of course this is all just one God of War fans thoughts, but I really do believe that the key to the future of God of War will have something to do with the somewhat rebirth of Kratos in God of War: Ascension. What about you guys? How do you feel God of War will debut on Playstation 4?
Update -- March 12th, 2013 -- God of War: Ascension Developer Looking Forward to PS4
While God of War for PS4 has not yet been talked about, this is because all eyes are on God of War: Ascension, releasing today for the PlayStation 3. However, this hasn't stopped Sony Santa Monica, the team behind God of War: Ascension, from discussing their thoughts on the PS4.
In an interview with VG247, game designer Mark Simon stated " [It's] a powerful machine. "
"It’s going to use processors that’ll we’ll be able to develop on right away, so there’s some really good things about that.
“I think that the promise of that machine, in terms of what it can deliver, being more engineered towards everyone being connected together, is an extremely important concept."
We all look forward to Sony Santa Monica's first PS4 game, God of War or otherwise!
