We PlayStation gamers have had to patiently wait for nearly a year now for the chance to play Mass Effect 2 (which still beats not getting it at all, a fact that still sadly exists with the original Mass Effect, which Microsoft still owns the publishing rights to), but it appears that wait will be more than worth it.
In a recent podcast featuring one of the game’s developers, it was revealed that the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 will run on the newly developed Mass Effect 3 engine, which should give the game a huge boost in the graphics department, and make it the definitive version of one of the most highly regarded games of all time (currently enjoying a 96 rating on Metacritic). It will also provide a nice preview of Mass Effect 3, the conclusion to the trilogy, which is set to launch in late 2011 for the PS3, 360, and PC.
More than Just a Pretty Face (If You're Into Aliens That Is)
In addition to the new engine, it had previously been announced that ME2 PS3 will come loaded with the previous DLC releases Lair of the Shadow Broker, Kasumi: Stolen Memory, and Project Overlord. A free weapon, the M-490 Blackstorm Projector Weapon, and armor, the Terminus Armor, will also be freely available on PSN until February 23, after which it will revert to paid DLC.
Lastly, the game will come with Mass Effect Genesis, an interactive comic created for the PS3 version. It will detail some of the backstory and events from the original game to help PlayStation gamers who never got the chance to play it to get caught up on the lore of the Mass Effect universe. The comic is being produced by Dark Horse, who published the previous ME comic book series, Redemption, and will publish the upcoming one, Evolution.
Bioware’s space opera action-RPG will hit the PlayStation 3 in North America on January 18, to be followed by a January 21 launch in Europe.
