One of the biggest success stories from the previous console generation wasn't a big budget, realistic shooter or action game but rather a family-friendly game that revolved around toys. The Skylanders franchise accrued more than $500 million in sales since its release, making it one of Activision's most successful properties on par with Call of Duty and World of Warcraft. The company looks to keep that success going with Skylanders: Swap Force, which brings the franchise to the next generation with a PlayStation 4 release.
As you likely already know, Skylanders is played using toy figures. Using a special board accessory, you can bring the toys to life on-screen as playable characters. Each of the 100 or so characters have their own special abilities, though many of these abilities overlap, and specific characters are necessary to reach certain parts of a level or finish a puzzle.
The best comparison would be Pokemon, except instead of catching digitized sprites, you're buying figures in real-life using real money. Players new to the series can purchase a Starter Pack, which includes a handful of characters and the game board used to add the characters to the game. Additional characters can be bought either in booster packs that give a random assortment or individual characters for a slightly higher price.
This same concept will carry forward to Skylanders: Swap Force but, in an a refreshing change, the previous characters will be usable in the new game. For once, your old PlayStation 3 accessories aren't worthless! However, you will need to buy a new game board for the PlayStation 4 version of Skylanders: Swap Force.
The biggest change is right there in the title of the game: the ability to mix and match characters, i.e swapping. Skylanders: Swap Force will introduce 16 brand new characters to the game with detachable upper and lower halves. Combining halves between the 16 different characters will open up over 250 possible combinations, according to Activision, with the combination of powers being necessary for completing puzzles and solving levels.
In addition to new characters, Swap Force adds new character abilities: flying, climbing and teleportation. In addition, every character can now jump, a feature solely lacking from previous Skylanders games. The game is brought to life with a brand new graphics engine, presenting the Skylanders characters and world in almost animated-like quality.
One of the most important things Skylanders fans want to know is "How much will these figures cost me?" Unlike a regular game, where a one time purchase is usually all that is necessary, the collectible aspect of Skylanders requires that players purchase additional figures to fully complete the game and their own collections.
The Starter Pack will run $74.99 and includes the board, game and a handful of figures. Individual characters will run $9.99 each and Swap Force characters will be $14.99 each.
Fun For Older Gamers Too
Skylanders is a franchise generally geared towards younger games, but Activision is looking to change that with the release of Swap Force.
Swap Force will include additional difficulty levels, enabling skilled players to crank up the difficulty for more of a challenge. Enemy types will be more varied as well.
Skylanders: Swap Force has been confirmed by Activision to be a PlayStation 4 launch title and will release on November 15th, 2013.
