While there are a lot of indie launch titles hitting the PlayStation 4 at launch, none capture the look and feel of Super Motherload. Developed by XGen Studios, Super Motherload promises a unique experience unlike any other game releasing on the PlayStation 4.
At its core, Super Motherload bears a lot of similarities to classic Namco franchise Mr. Driller. As a drilling machine, your job is to drill further and further into Mars to uncover valuable minerals. However, you will quickly learn that there is much more to your job than was first revealed thanks to an intriguing story.
Super Motherload randomizes the game world every time you play, so even after finishing the game it is still possible to replay it again and again. As you harvest minerals, you can purchase upgrades and other equipment enabling you to burrow further and further beneath the surface of Mars. In addition, the game features multiple playable characters, further changing the game each time you play depending on the character you select.
While much of the story has been kept under wraps, what we do know is that it is written by comic book scribe Kurtis Wiebe, writer of comics such as Peter Panzerfaust and Green Wake. Super Motherload also includes multiple endings based on the choices you make throughout the game, further increasing the replay value.
To help bring the story to life, each character in the game is fully voice acted, similar to what you'd expect in a large AAA production. Despite it's indie roots, Super Motherload feels like a retail release.
While Super Motherload can be played alone, you can also play with three other players in a cooperative fashion. Players can either work with or against each other, sharing or hogging resources.
Players who are eager to get a taste for what Super Motherload has to offer can try out the game's Flash-based predecessor, Motherload, for free.
Super Motherload will see release on the PlayStation Network when the PS4 launches on November 15th, 2013. No price has been announced, though you can expect the game to retail for under $20.
