Through a clever combination of art, voice acting, and some light gameplay, the visual novel genre has grown a lot on the PS4. Some of the finest stories I’ve experienced as a gamer have come in the form of these enhanced novels that take advantage of gaming technology to become more than text on a page.
The Danganronpa series is one that more people need to play. In an industry full of shooters and cookie-cutter RPGs, this series comes stomping in with a robotic bear, incredible murder mysteries, and unique gameplay.
Visual novels in today's industry run the gambit from literal digital books to interactive stories that include puzzles and additional gameplay. The Book of Regrets is among the latter, offering a compelling story, but also plenty of choices to make, puzzles to solve, and mysteries to uncover.
The visual novel genre has enjoyed some excellent entries on the PS4 in recent months, and now we have a new contender: Echoes of the Fey: The Fox’s Trail. In this game, you play as Sofya Rykov, a private detective working in the outskirts of a city set in a high fantasy world where magic is real and tensions are high between humans and Leshin races.
Goichi Suda, more commonly known as Suda 51, is one of the most recognizable names in the game industry. Known for amazing cult classics like Killer 7, Shadows of the Damned, and No More Heroes, his reputation truly precedes him.
With a name like Danganronpa, it's hard to know what players should expect going into this horror visual novel/murder mystery title. Originally released on the PS Vita, the first two games in this series have finally made their way to the PS4 with the release of Danganronpa 1+2 Reload.
