The Outer Worlds Review

The Outer Worlds has been out for nearly two weeks now and I have to say, it is a fun game. To sum it up, it is practically Fallout in Space. That should come as no surprise considering the developers at Obsidian created Fallout New Vegas.

Before we get real deep here, it is important to note that while The Outer Worlds was in development, Microsoft purchased the developer studio. There is no way to know if and when the sequel is released, if it will make its way to a PlayStation console, although Microsoft heads have stated they want their games to playable on all platforms in the future, including PlayStation. In the meantime, we can enjoy what is currently available.

Back to the game. I cannot stress enough that this Fallout in Space. As far as Fallout games go in comparison, I feel like this is a little more fast paced. Some have been disappointed to learn that this game is First Person only, but if that’s not a deal breaker for you, this just might be well worth your time.

In regards to the space theme, it gives me a 60’s-70’s tv show vibe. Think Lost in Space. If you aren’t familiar with that old show, forget I said anything at all. Anyway, you’re pretty much an astronaut that is meant to reach the furthest parts of outer space. Unfortunately, our protagonists ship runs into some problems and winds up landing elsewhere. While the rest of crew hibernates in cryosleep, you my friend, will go out and about to discover The Outer Worlds!!!

I’m sorry if this disappoints you, but I can’t really describe it much more than this without spoiling the game storyline, but I can go into other aspects that shouldn’t ruin the game for you or anyone else that hasn’t [laid through it yet.

The graphics are very up to par. Beautiful landscapes that are breathtaking and the characters do have some good detail. I expected to be greeted with a buggy game system, but I had no issues of the sort. That was definitely a relief to me. Granted, I did play this on the PS4 Pro and not a standard PS4, so I can’t say if the standard consoles have issues or not. I apologize for that.

Audio is mint. I have rarely played a game that had displeasing audio, but good or bad, it should be mentioned. I found the music to really set the tone of the game. A lot of people overlook the importance of good music score. If more games put out crappy tunes, we all liley take note when we appreciate a quality track. As far as sound effects go, it was decent. I didn’t hear anything out of place and it was pretty standard for any game these days.

Controls function well and are responsive. I admit that I had a little trouble with my accuracy at first. My aim was slightly off, but that was operator error and not an in-game issue. Infact, for a Fallout-esk RPG type, I found the movement speed to be quite refreshing and not as slow paced as I had expected it to be.

The leveling up and perk system is very much like the Fallout series, but slightly different in regards to how it is displayed visually. Create a character and pick a few extra perks to start out with and continue playing to level up the way you want. That is one thing about these types of RPGs I really enjoy. The freedom to upgrade my characters how I want to.

The game isn’t as big as I thought it would be. It is open world, but not open space. You can’t fly your spaceship manually, but it does offer fast travel. I did expect to be able to fly it myself, but the good storyline makes up for little things. At least for me, that is.

In my mind, the lack of multiplayer is probably the biggest thing missing. I would have really enjoyed playing with at least one other person. I’m not saying we need some Team match or Battle Royale variants, but a little co-op goes a long way.

All this in mind, I rate this game 9.0 out of 10. Great storyline, good graphics and audio. It sums up to a great experience that lacks little. I put roughly 20 hours into the game, but I have talked with people that have managed to put in over 40 hours. That is some serious dedication to finding every last thing you can.

Have you played or are playing The Outer Worlds? What are your thoughts on this title?
